Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.
The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.
Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.
He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".

The reports detailing Mel Gibson's alleged arrest on suspicion of drunk driving on Friday in Malibu seem to be spiraling out of control.
The article currently linked at the top of Drudge Report alleges that Gibson went on an anti-semitic rampage during his arrest, hurling religious epithets at police officers.
It is also being suggested that Los Angeles County Sheriff's department had the initial report doctored to keep the real story under wraps.
Although Gibson has apologized for his behavior after being arrested, it is still pertinent to ask whether he became a deliberate target following his increasingly antagonistic political stance towards the Neo-Con hierarchy.
The tabloid media circus over the fact that Gibson had one drink over the legal limit is noticably absent when members of the establishment are caught engaging in similar or worse activity - George W. Bush being a prime example.
Gibson has long been targeted for smear campaigns since his release of The Passion of The Christ which was also accused of being anti-semitic.
Gibson's father Hutton has also continuously been branded anti-semitic in the media. Many believe that this is directly due to his knowledge of the New World Order agenda and his efforts to expose it. The media often take Hutton Gibson's comments about global conspiracy out of context and paint him up as an anti-semite.
Could it be that this time Mel Gibson has once again been set up for character assassination?

years ago This one time - I was had one beer and woke up in jail. These people had been coming over who I later found out were LEO relatives (narks imo) I think what happened was they slipped me a drug like Rohypnol and then this other time this person definitely put this antabuse in a drink, which makes you instantly ill.

I want video of him saying "Are you a Jew" or I won't believe the Law Enforcement Officers. I bet his family has all been threatened. If for some reason he was out at 2:30am @ only .12bac and somebody slipped him a ruffy, I still want to see video of him saying those things because he wouldn't remember what he said and I don't trust leo they are a bunch of liars especially when it comes to going to court. MIAMI - Timothy Muldowny's lawyers decided on an unconventional approach to fight his drunken driving case: They sought computer programming information for the Intoxilyzer alcohol breath analysis machine to see whether his test was accurate.
Their strategy paid off.
The company that makes the Intoxilyzer refused to reveal the computer source code for its machine because it was a trade secret. A county judge tossed out Muldowny's alcohol breath test — a crucial piece of evidence in a DUI case — and the ruling was upheld by an appeals court in 2004.
Since then, DUI suspects in Florida, New York, Nebraska and elsewhere have mounted similar challenges. Many have won or have had their DUI charges reduced to lesser offenses. The strategy could affect thousands of the roughly 1.5 million DUI arrests made each year in the United States, defense lawyers say.
