Revelation 13 describes the first beast.
Revelation 13
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

 2And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

1. The sea in prophecy refers to people, or populated area. So the Beast would arise out of the populated nations. The papacy arose out of Rome Italy, the heart of western Europe.

The last form this Beast assumes has ten horns representing ten kingdoms or tribes. The papacy arose in Italy among ten kingdoms.

8. The papacy does great blasphemy when it claims to forgive sins(Luke 5:21) and claims to be God.

9. The papacy conducts an ongoing war to stamp out protestantism.

10.The papcy reigned for 42 prophetic months or 1260 years - from A.D.538-1798.

11. The number 666 is found throughout the Beast system as well as stamped right on the Pope's official title. VICARIUS FILII DEI (Vicar of the Son of God).

Horns are prophetic symbols for kingdoms
Daniel 7:24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

The little horn uprooted/extinct three kingdoms listed above and is described in Daniel 7:8 as the Antichrist. It is a little kingdom, the Vatican is the smallest country. It has eys of a man and a mouth speaking great things.

Daniel 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Here is how Dr.Mervyn Maxwell, a theologian and historian, described the results in volume 1, page 129, of his book God Cares: "The Catholic emperor Zeno(474-491) arranged a treaty with the Ostrogoths in 487 which resulted in the eradication of the kingdom of the Arian Heruls in 493. And Catholic emperor Justinian(527-565) exterminated the Arian Vandals in 534 and significantly broke the power of the Arian Ostrogoths in 538. Thus were Daniel's three horns-the Heruls, the Vandals and the Ostrogoths-'plucked up by the roots'"
